Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

September 4-10, 2017

We celebrated Abbot Bonaventure's 99th birthday on Wednesday. He sat at the abbot's table at our main meal in the evening. Father Abbot Kurt celebrated Abbot Bonaventure with some remarks, and then we enjoyed colloquium (talking) and cake in his honor.

The seminary academic year began on Tuesday involving several monk-seminarians and monk-professors and monk-administrators and monk-spiritual directors.

On Friday, we kicked off our "Hollywood on the Hill" - a quarterly movie for everyone working and living on the Hill: monks, co-workers and students. This was the first of four "Hollywood on the Hill" nights throughout this year. We screened "Hidden Figures" -- the story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program.

On Saturday, Archabbot Kurt received several new oblates and oblate novices into our oblate program. Following the oblations and investitures, Father Denis R. gave a presentation on "Oblation and the Domestic Church." A reception followed. To learn more about our oblate program, click here.

This week at table, we finished reading Father Raymond's article "Intergenerational Living: Challenges and Strategies for Monastic Communities," which appeared in the June 2017 issue of American Benedictine Review. We began reading Under the Big Top: A Season with the Circus by Bruce Feiler.

Archabbot Kurt will bless the renovated and upgraded Monte Cassino chapel on October 1, and he will also offer the pilgrimage reflection that day. Here are the other pilgrimage dates for October.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
