Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

July 17-23, 2017

On Monday, we celebrated the Commemoration of all Abbots, Monks, and Benefactors of Saint Meinrad and Einsiedeln. Father Abbot Kurt presided at our Eucharist.

Also on Monday, Father Columba began leading a chant workshop in St. Gregory Hall.

On Wednesday, the Chapter approved Novice Joseph's mid-year review and accepted Candidate Father Noel to begin novitiate in August. We also enjoyed some fresh tomatoes from a local grower in Fulda. Additionally, on Wednesday, we had a culpa service in our Chapter Room.

On Friday, we welcomed 140 participants for an AA retreat.

Father Sean presided and preached at our Eucharist on Saturday for the Feast of Mary Magdalene. Additionally, a handful of monks joined Brother Nathaniel for a hike in the Ferdinand State Forest.

The weekend course for graduate theology students occurred over the weekend.

On Sunday, we hosted an organ concert in the Archabbey Church. The organists were participants in the chant workshop and featured compositions by Bach, Hindemith, Mendelssohn, Sowerby, Sweelinck and Eugene Hill.

The "One Bread, One Cup" (OBOC) interns and staff and monks returned Sunday evening from their first conference at Conception Abbey and Conception Seminary College. Father Brendan (President-Rector of Conception Seminary College) helped with logistics and fulfilled some catechist roles during the conference. OBOC Director Tammy Becht, Father Christian, and Brothers James and Simon helped with the program at Conception.

Closing this week's About the House … an update on Branchville Prison Ministry by Brother Zachary:

Catholic ministry continues at the Branchville Correctional Facility with much help from the greater Saint Meinrad community. Dr. Patrick Cooper of the Seminary and School of Theology conducts the weekly Fully Man program on Wednesday afternoons. He has been joined by Brother William, who has taken the training to be a certified volunteer in the prison.

In the fall, two seminarians will join them for their pastoral formation ministry in the WITH (Workers in the Harvest) program. Brother Kolbe is assisting with the Monday night Bible Study. Father Jeremy continues to make weekly visits in his role as mentor to many of the offenders.

Fathers Guerric, Noel, Jeremy, Harry, Barnabas, Jonathan, Eugene, Adrian, and Christian take turns celebrating Mass with us on Sundays. The men of Branchville are deeply grateful for this service and have developed a great affection for Saint Meinrad. Two offenders are currently inquiring about the oblate program and one of the prison's staff chaplains, a Lutheran minister, is also interested in becoming an oblate.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
