Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

April 4-17, 2017

**Writer's note: I forgot to submit the About the House last week, so this is the last two weeks of updates from the monastery. Easter blessings to you!

This past week

We celebrated the Triduum liturgies last week with our guests who were here on retreat or who joined us for our liturgies. On Thursday, Abbot Kurt washed the feet of 12 monks and guests, and we processed to the altar of repose in St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel after the Holy Thursday liturgy.

Good Friday brought a somber and reflective liturgy as we venerated the cross and listened to the chant of the Passion according to John by Fathers Tobias and Jeremy and Brother John Mark. We let the light of Christ shine outside and inside the Archabbey Church as we ushered in the Easter Vigil. Archabbot Kurt served as the principal celebrant for our Triduum liturgies.

Father Prior John is our principal celebrant and heb for our Easter Monday liturgies today, and we enjoyed colloquium (talking) at our main meal today.

Prior to the Triduum, we had the Anointing of the Sick at Vespers on Wednesday with the newly consecrated oils received from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Chrism Mass the day before.

We had a communal observance of the Stations of the Cross on Monday. Each station had a reflection and collect prepared by a different monk. The observance took place in our Holly Tree Courtyard with Father Donald Walpole's Stations of the Cross from the St. Joseph Oratory as our visual image.

Father Colman gave the Holy Week retreat this year.

April 4-10

Father Paul preached and presided at our penance service on Monday.

As part of Lent, we processed into church on Wednesday at Mass while chanting and reflecting on a penitential litany.

Our pilgrimages to honor the Blessed Mother at the Monte Cassino Shrine have been scheduled for the Sundays in May.

The pilgrimages begin with an opening hymn and a short sermon, followed by a rosary procession. The service ends with the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and a hymn. Speakers and topics for the pilgrimages are:

May 7 -- Br. Lorenzo PeƱalosa, OSB, speaking on "Our Lady of Perpetual Help"

May 14 -- Fr. Joseph Cox, OSB, on "Mary, Our Mother"

May 21 -- Fr. Barnabas Gillespie, OSB, on "Holy Lady, Chosen by the Father"

May 28 -- Novice Joseph Wagner, OSB, on "Mary, Consoler of the Sick"

Services begin at 2 p.m. Central time.

Brother Giles received the Indiana Senate Certificate of Achievement for 50 years of service to the Saint Meinrad Archabbey Volunteer Fire Department. The certificate, signed by State Senator Jean Leising, congratulates Brother Giles on outstanding service to the community and tireless dedication, which has improved life and safety for Indiana residents.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
