Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

May 27 - June 9, 2016

It has been an exciting and eventful couple weeks, especially leading up to Archabbot Kurt Stasiak's election as our 10th abbot.

Here is a press release about his election and a "meet the new abbot" story.

Because Abbot Kurt served as Prior until his election, he appointed Father John McMullen, OSB, as prior effective June 11, at First Vespers. Here is a biography of Father John.

Thank you for your prayers for our community these past couple weeks. We had all but 3 confreres home for the election, so it was a nice celebration with our monastic family.

Rewinding a little bit…

On Sunday, May 29, we congratulated our jubilarians of priesthood! We joined Father Mel (60 years), Father (Prior) John and Father Warren (50 years), and Fathers David, Edward, Patrick, and Joseph (25 years) in welcoming their guests, and we asked God's continued blessings on the prayer and work of our confreres as we wished them ad multos annos!  We celebrated our jubilee Eucharist that Sunday followed by a nice lunch with their guests.

Abbot Justin (now Father Justin) presided at our Eucharist on Wednesday, June 1, his feast day. June 1 was also the actual ordination anniversary of Father Patrick; he was invited to the abbot's table for supper-and we had colloquium in their honor. The next day, Abbot President Vincent presided and offered the homily at the Mass of the Holy Spirit prior to the election, which began at 9 a.m.

Brother Simon served as a facilitator for a leadership institute for his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, working with undergraduates, alumni and friends of the fraternity to have meaningful conversation about fraternity, brotherhood and leadership. The fraternity held this institute in Oxford, Ohio (Miami University), where the fraternity was founded in 1839.

The One Bread, One Cup college interns are gearing up to lead the first conference of this high school liturgical leadership program. Several monks are helping with the program as chaplains, directors, administrative assistants, catechists and professors.

Brother André completed his culinary arts training at Sullivan University in Louisville, Ky., and he is looking forward to living and working full-time here in the monastery. Abbot Kurt also appointed Brother André as "scheduling guru" … we are working on a title.

He will do most of the house assignments, a task typically undertaken by the prior. With Brother André performing the scheduling, this will allow Father Prior John to continue pastoral assistance at St. Boniface and St. Meinrad parishes, where Father Anthony is pastor.

Brother Stephen began shadowing our volunteer firefighters, including wearing a pager to assist with calls.

Abbot Kurt appointed Father Thomas as the liturgical master of ceremonies and also chair of the liturgical advisory committee. He also appointed Father Barnabas to the liturgical advisory committee, which also includes Brother Kim, Father Jeremy, Father Barnabas, Father Thomas (chair), Brother Francis, and Brother André.

We plan to have homebrew beer, crafted by some of our junior monks, twice a week. Definitely on Saturday and then either on Tuesday or Thursday.

In closing, a funny story from Brother Francis about a bat that meandered into his cell…Read the blog post here.

It's good to laugh, and we heard that at table last night in the book we are reading at table: Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life by Father James Martin, SJ. In the book, he quoted Thomas Merton: "I think the main reason we have so little joy is that we take ourselves too seriously."

So, have a good laugh this week.

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
