Fr. Simon Herrmann, OSB, will present a retreat titled “Letting Holy Leisure Be Our Way” on September 13-15, 2024, at the Saint Meinrad Guest House and Retreat Center, St. Meinrad, IN.
The late 20th century philosopher Josef Piper said that our world is heading toward “total work.” People are being subsumed into work, and the world’s “leisure” is a means to prepare for more work. This retreat will reflect on the problem of “total work” and steps we can take to let holy leisure, grounded in God, be the way that gives us life and gives meaning to our work.
Fr. Simon joined the monastic community in January 2015 and professed his solemn vows in 2019. He is a former resident of Findlay, OH, and a graduate of the University of Dayton, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communication management in 2010. He earned a Master of Arts in Catholic philosophical studies in 2017 and a Master of Divinity in 2021, both from Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology. He was ordained as a priest on June 27, 2021.
Fr. Simon worked as an associate editor for the national office of Beta Theta Pi fraternity from 2010-11 and then at Saint Meinrad Archabbey as the director of alumni relations from 2011-14. He also served as a college intern for three summers in Saint Meinrad’s “One Bread, One Cup” program. He currently is director of donor relations and young adult engagement in Saint Meinrad’s Development Office, and he serves as socius (associate formator for the novices and junior monks).
The fee for the retreat is $300 for one person, $425 for two, and it includes a guest room and meals. The commuter rate is $150.
