Saint Meinrad Archabbey Guest House and Retreat Center, St. Meinrad, IN, will host a series of four-week basket weaving workshops starting in July taught by Br. Jean Fish, OSB. The workshops are titled Sculptural Basket Weaving: Object Form and Ornamentation.
Participants will learn various techniques for creating woven vessels such as a hanging ornament, a bowl, and a cup. These objects will provide a fundamental understanding of basket weaving that can be adapted for each individual’s creative vision. The use of various colored yarns will also allow participants to generate a wide variety of patterns.
The first session will be offered on the following Mondays: July 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Central Time.
The second session will be offered on the following Mondays in September and October: September 9, 16, 30, and October 7 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Central Time.
The third session will be offered on the following Mondays in November and December: November 18 and 25, and December 2 and 9 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Central Time.
Br. Jean Fish, OSB, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey, has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a Masters of Theology from Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, and a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology from Sonoma State University, California. He is a fiber artist who works primarily with sculptural basket weaving. While pursuing his Bachelor of Fine Arts, his work discussed grief and the role that contemplation can have during the search for peace.
The cost of the four-week session is $75. For information on supplies needed and to register, call 812-357-6611 or visit www.saintmeinrad.org/retreats/arts-crafts-workshops/.
