Volunteering with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities has been a blessing for me and the team that offers them a sewing class each week. I have found the witness of those we serve to be a source of hope. By offering a ministry of presence, I have experienced Christ in refreshing ways.

The participants often say, “thank you” and patiently wait for their turn to sew. One week, they complete items for their personal use; on alternating weeks, they make items for babies and children served by St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities in New Albany, IN.

It is satisfying for participants to progress in sewing skills. Their interpersonal skills are affected as well. There is give-and-take as they praise their peers for completed work or say things like, “That’s okay, you can do better next time,” or “I think you did great.”

Such a good witness gives hope to the world. St. Benedict is about encouragement that sees the good in life and gives hope for today and tomorrow.
