Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

January 3-9, 2017

Several priests from our community were out in parishes this weekend as part of our Saint Meinrad Sunday program. In several local dioceses, ordained members of our community visit parishes and take the Sunday Eucharist schedule.

During the Mass, they preach on the Sunday readings and also share a bit about our work at Saint Meinrad and encourage the parishioners to participate both spiritually and financially in our work.

Those who will be giving Saint Meinrad Sundays in January include: Archabbot Kurt and Fathers Meinrad, Pius, Noël, Harry, Bede, Jonathan, Eugene, Julian, Godfrey, Joseph, Christian and Luke.

At the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord today (Monday), the community gathered at the font in the Archabbey Church before we began the celebration of the Eucharist. Father Paul, our Mass presider for the week, processed down the main aisle of the Church and blessed the water. As the community processed to the choir stalls, Father Paul blessed the congregation with the holy water.

Catholic campus ministry student leaders from the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana spent the weekend here preparing for this semester of leading small groups. Brothers Peduru and Zachary helped with the weekend.

Archabbot Kurt presided at our Office and Eucharistic Liturgies this Sunday for the Epiphany of the Lord. We enjoyed colloquium (talking) at our noon meal.

Some position updates from the monastery:

  • In addition to his Director of Monastery Vocations work and his work with our liturgies and teaching in the school, Brother John Mark will continue leading us through the Praesidium accreditation, which sets guidelines and standards for religious communities concerning professional boundaries and ministry to minors.

  • Brother Zachary will continue helping on our vocations team. He served as vocation director during Brother John Mark's sabbatical.

  • Father Sean is taking over the in-house mail delivery and will continue as one of the presiders in our House Chapel and as a chaplain at Monastery Immaculate Conception. He will continue assisting our guests who join us for prayer in the Archabbey Church, and will continue managing the worship aids. Father Sean also joins the team of monks who will be asked to drive confreres to the hospital and doctors' offices.

  • An additional assignment for Brother Lorenzo: In-house Guestmaster. He will tend to the needs of those guests staying in our house and joining us for meals and recreations.

Have a good week!

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
