Saint Meinrad Archabbey

A catholic monastery devoted to the teachings of St. Benedict

July 29-August 4, 2016

Wow! What a week! Most of the week we spent a lot of time focusing on our move back to the monastery. Almost everyone is moved back into the monastery. The infirmary residents will move back in early September. We were blessed to have the competent and untiring work of our Physical Facilities crew. They-and we-were assisted by members of the Durchholz family and their friends, some of our oblates, and a member of the Tell City K of C. Thanks to all our friends, benefactors, and co-workers who support us in so many ways in our prayer and work!

Last week we hosted the 88th annual Alumni Reunion. Around 270 alumni and guests were present on the Hill - about 100 more than last year! Archabbot Kurt presided and preached at the Reunion Mass. Father Denis R. presented on "Spotlight: The Church in the Aftermath of the Sexual Abuse Crisis" for our Day of Recollection on Monday. Bestselling author Sherry Weddell gave a seminar on Tuesday on her widely acclaimed book,Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus. Also, Kyle Kramer, former director of the graduate degree programs at Saint Meinrad and current executive director of the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center in Louisville, gave a talk on the papal encyclicalLaudato Sion Tuesday afternoon. The novices and juniors hosted a beer-tasting of their homebrew on Tuesday, and on Monday several monks helped with a schola concert for the Reunion.

Last Sunday 5 of our confreres celebrated 60 years of profession: Father Denis Q, Brother Andrew, Father Meinrad, Father Timothy and Father Lambert.

We started a new book at dinner this week:Sacred Fire: A Vision for a Deeper Human and Christian Maturityby Ronald Rolheiser.

Last Friday (after the time of submitting the About the House), during Vespers, Archabbot Kurt blessed Father Justin as he prepares to begin his work as Vice-Rector at Bishop Simon Bruté college seminary in Indianapolis.

Archabbot Kurt recently made an appointment and some committee assignments:

Brother James will serve as assistant sacristan effective August 16 for a period of six months.

Father Colman is chairing the "Conference Committee" that will look at how we can give a little extra attention to Advent and Lent through various practices. Joining him on the committee are Fathers Gavin and Anthony and Brothers Simon and Nathaniel.

Over the next couple weeks we will have several monastic vocation discerners visiting us, and on September 23-25 we are hosting a monastic observance or "Come and See" weekend. (Readers: help spread the word for us about this great look into monastic life!)

Each day the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey write another page in the long history of Benedictine monks throughout the world. Here are recent events chronicled at Saint Meinrad.
