Monk professes first vows at Saint Meinrad

Novice Joshua W. Leeuw professed his temporary vows
as a Benedictine monk in a ceremony on January 20, 2017, at Saint
Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad, IN.
He has completed his novitiate, a year of prayer and study of
the Benedictine way of life. As is the custom during the profession
of vows, he chooses a religious name. Novice Joshua is now Br.
A native of Columbia City, IN, he attended Columbia City High
School and graduated from Holy Cross College in 2010 with a
bachelor's degree in theology. He then spent five years in
formation with the Holy Cross Fathers at the University of Notre
In 2013, Br. Elias began a two-year stint as a theology teacher
at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, CA. He has also done
ministry work as a counselor, hospital chaplain, teacher and
homeless shelter volunteer.
Temporary vows are typically for three years. This period offers
a continuing opportunity for the monk and the monastic community to
determine whether monastic life is, indeed, the right vocation for
